Naga City (Agenzia Fides) - Catholic schools are essential to the mission of the Church in the Philippines and represent the beating heart of the nation: is what was stated by the general assembly of the Association of Catholic schools held on 8 July in Naga City. As Fides learns, the Assembly outlined the challenges for the future of Catholic institutions in the archipelago.
The more than 200 delegates present started from a deep "examination of conscience", looking for ways to improve the training provided by Catholic schools and developing a process of control of the values, characteristics, the quality of teaching. A Catholic school must be animated and guided by a philosophy, by a vision and a basic mission that embraces and preserves its Catholic identity: each school will follow a path of assessment that will help keep the overall high standard.
The starting point is that "Christ is the master": every institution, therefore, can only be centered on the person and message of Jesus Christ: only thus, concluded the Assembly, the school will fully be able to carry out the evangelizing mission. In the Philippines, the Catholic Church runs overall 1,146 kindergartens, 934 primary schools, 1,206 middle schools, including more than 160 colleges and universities throughout the country.
