Lilongwe (Agenzia Fides) - "Members of Parliament become leaders because people vote for them to represent them in parliament. By choosing to skip parliament session without genuine valid reasons, they betray the people who gave them the mandate to represent them", says Martin Chiphwanya, Acting National Coordinator of the Episcopal Justice and Peace Commission of Malawi, where most of the population is at risk of hunger (see Fides 05/07/2016). In this situation, by choosing to skip parliament session without genuine valid reasons, they betray the people who gave them the mandate to represent them.
"Citizens should strongly protest against these MPs and demand explanations from them. Most importantly, constituents should be bold enough not to vote for these MPs again because they have deliberately chosen to abandon them".
Members of Parliament get approximately US Dollars 56 per day as subsistence allowance and approximately US Dollars 14 sitting allowance which is paid out before the meeting starts. According to the World Bank, the average annual income of a citizen in Malawi is $ 250 per year. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 06/07/2016)
