ASIA/JAPAN - Appointment of the Bishop of Hiroshima

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On 28 June 2016 the Holy Father appointed Rev. Fr. Alexis Mitsuru Shirahama, P.S.S., rector of the National Catholic Seminary of Fukuoka as Bishop of the vacant Diocese of Hiroshima (Japan).
The new bishop was born on May 20, 1962 in Kamigoto, Archdiocese of Nagasaki. In 1986 he obtained a Baccalaureate in Philosophy at Keio University in Tokyo, and in 1990 a Baccalaureate in Theology at the St. Sulpice Seminary of Fukuoka. He later studied at the Catholic Institute of Paris, obtaining a Licentiate in Liturgy with specialization in sacramental Theology.
He was ordained a priest on March 19, 1990 in Urakami, Archdiocese of Nagasaki, and incardinated in the same Metropolitan See. In 1993 he joined the Society of the Priests of Saint Sulpice.
Since his ordination he has held the following pastoral roles: Formator at St. Sulpice Seminary in Fukuoka (1995-2008); since 1995: Member of the Liturgy Commission at the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Japan and professor of Liturgy and Sacramental Theology; since 2012: Rector of the Catholic Seminary of Japan.
