Qamishli (Agenzia Fides) - Christian political activist of Syriac-Orthodox confession Gabriel Moshe Kourieh, head of the political bureau of the Assyrian Democratic Organization, arrested by Syrian security forces in Qamishli, his hometown, on December 19, 2013 has been released. During the first phase of the Syrian conflict which began in 2011, Kourieh - recognized as a moderate Syrian opposition exponent – expressed himself in favor of a peaceful power transition, declaring his support regarding the demonstrations against the government in Assad. Kourieh also appeared among the signatories of the Damascus Declaration for Democratic National Change. His arrest was condemned by many international organizations active in defending human rights.
