ASIA/LEBANON - Maronite Bishops: No to sectarian partition plans in the Middle East

Bkerké (Agenzia Fides) - It is necessary to stop the dismemberment sectarian plans with which some international circles think they can resolve conflicts, redrawing the boundaries of the Middle Eastern Countries, beginning with Iraq and Syria, and to preserve and encourage the prospect of a collaborative co-existence among different ethnic and religious components that encourages processes of democratization also to the benefit of the Middle Eastern peoples.
In a statement at the conclusion of their annual synod, under the chairmanship of Patriarch Bechara Boutros Rai, the Bishops stressed the importance of continuing the presence of Maronite Catholics in Lebanon and the region. The Maronite synodal assembly listened with particular attention to the reports of Maronite Bishops in Syrian eparchies, focusing the attention on the tragic condition experienced by the civilian population in Aleppo. With regards to the situation in Lebanon - reads the final communiqué, sent to Agenzia Fides - the Bishops also emphasized the negative impact of the presidential vacuum on political, security, economic and social levels, as well as the disruption of constitutional and administrative institutions.
