San Sebastian (Agenzia Fides) - "Vuelta a la escuela" is a new project promoted by the NGO Solidaridad Internacional to support the schooling of 100 Syrian children in the Lebanese school system. Ten refugee teachers will be trained to teach the subjects included in the Lebanese curriculum, very different from the Syrian one, so that pupils can integrate without any problems in public schools. Lebanon is the Country where there is the largest number of Syrian refugees in the world: about a million. One person out of four is a refugee. 400,000 children are forced to drop out of school and subjected to physical, psychological violence, exploitation, early marriage, recruitment by armed groups.
The objective of the project, said the director of the association in a statement sent to Agenzia Fides, is to counter this effect with school and psychosocial support, since aid has so far been focused on nutrition or health. Through the project 50 Syrian boys and 50 Syrian girls will be selected in the age group of 4 to 6 years who live in conditions of extreme need in the villages south of Beirut. They will receive a school kit which includes a backpack, notebooks, books and pencils. In addition, ten women refugees will be selected, former teachers in Syria, who will be formed with a course called Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Resilience, designed to prepare teachers on how to deal traumatic situations. In all, the initiative will last ten months. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 21/06/2016)
