Tehuantepec (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishop of Tehuantepec, His Exc. Mgr. Oscar Armando Campos Contreras, called for dialogue "in search of justice to help overcome many social delays in the life of our people". The statement of the diocese, also signed by the parish priests and all the priests, launches an appeal to stop the riots and roadblocks that are occurring in the Tehuantepec region, such as protests by teachers, which have caused deaths and injuries.
"Authoritarianism and violence are two sides of the same coin (...), many different interests intertwine in conflicts. This is our invitation to both parties, authorities and teachers: put reason above passion", reads the statement sent to Fides, which is dated June 19.
This is now the fifth week of protests in Mexico against the education reform, teacher evaluation and dismissal of a group of them. Teachers and parents of some schools in the capital demonstrated to demand justice for the six people killed in Oaxaca, where there were violent clashes. Yesterday, the teachers of the state of Guerrero demonstrated against the government for the same reasons. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 21/06/2016)
