Guatemala City (Agenzia Fides) - Guatemala, with 850 thousand 937 child laborers and 43% of children who do not attend school, has the highest rate of child labor in Latin America, according to information sent to Fides. The alarm was launched by the Office for Human Rights in Guatemala: the northwestern department of Huehuetenango and Quiché are the worst affected by the phenomenon, which generally involves young children of indigenous origin.
The International Labour Organization said that in Latin America more than 5 and a half million children of both sexes work without having reached the minimum age for admission to employment or are engaged in prohibited activities. In general, children work in the agricultural field or in sectors at serious risk, such as mines, landfills, domestic work, fishing. In addition there are other thousands who are not counted, forced illegally to the most serious forms of child labor, involved in sexual exploitation networks for commercial purposes, drug trafficking, trafficking of children for purposes of labor exploitation and use in armed conflict.
