Ulaanbaatar (Agenzia Fides) - In the year of the Jubilee of Mercy a new local Catholic mission, dedicated to the Divine Mercy opens in Erdenet, the second largest city in Mongolia: confirms the Catholic Church in Mongolia to Agenzia Fides, explaining that civil authorities have granted official authorization for a 3-year-period, ensuring that a missionary may have a visa and stay permanently in the mission.
Erdenet has over 80,000 inhabitants and is mainly populated by miners. The Catholic community has been present in Erdenet since 2003, when the Missionaries of Scheut (CIMC, the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary) opened a nursery school for the poorest children. Currently about twenty Catholics live there who also take care of the catechumenate for those who ask to be baptized. There are also Christian Protestant, Mormon and Orthodox communities in different cities.
The news of the new mission creates great joy in the small Catholic Mongolian community (reborn in 1992 and today there are just over a thousand baptized), while Deacon Joseph Enkh-Baatar will be ordained on 28 August in Ulaanbaatar by the Apostolic Prefect of Ulaanbaatar, His Exc. Mgr. Wenceslao S. Padilla CICM, and will be the first Mongolian priest. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 16/06/2016)
