ASIA/INDIA - Local Catholics join “Help Kashmir” campaign coordinated by a Hindu leader - inter-religious prayer for earthquake victims

New Delhi (Fides Service) - “Help Kashmir” is an aid campaign in aid of victims of the October 8 earthquake launched by religious leaders, churches, NGOs and associations in Bhopal, capital of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
The campaign, supported also by the local Catholic community, was launched at a meeting attended by civil and religious leaders and hundreds of people, many involved in work of solidarity.
“We are with Kashmir” is the motto of the campaign and participants voted unanimously for a highly respected local Hindu Mr Swami Atma Bolanad to be the head of the campaign. Mr Swami is known for his tolerance and wisdom. Addressing those present Mr Swami encouraged the participants in their work to assist those in need without religious or social discrimination, particular in Muslim areas. He said voluntary work helps heal wounds and build social harmony .
People are also helping with prayers. Recently the Archbishop of Delhi Vincent Concessao , presided an interfaith prayer meeting for the earthquake victims. He told those present “Natural disasters are inevitable. We all belong to the one human family and are moved to compassion and are close to those who suffer, the helpless, irrespective of religious beliefs”.
Volunteers who recently returned from the affected areas stressed the importance of spiritual and material assistance.
