AMERICA/PARAGUAY - Four years after the massacre of Curuguaty investigations do not go ahead

Canindeyú (Agenzia Fides) - The Paraguayan Bishop of the diocese of San Juan Bautista de las Misiones, His Exc. Mgr. Mario Melanio Medina Salinas, celebrated yesterday, Sunday, June 12, a Holy Mass in the countryside of Marina Cué, where four years ago 17 people were massacred (see Fides 18/06/2012).
The ceremony was intended to remind what is commonly referred to as "the massacre of Curuguaty", which occurred in the department of Canindeyú. On 15 June 2012, in an attempt to evict the peasants who had taken possession of the lands of Marina Cué, as they claimed that the land belonged to the state and had to be assigned to them, while the Campos Morumbi company, of deceased Senator Blas Riquelme, claimed the property. 17 people were killed, 11 peasants and six policemen. After the massacre, Congress accused President Fernando Lugo, of promoting the invasions of land.
Yesterday's celebration was held at the foot of the large cross erected in memory of the deceased. Policemen, relatives of victims and various farmers attended the ceremony, according to the note sent to Fides by local sources. Mgr.
