Santiago (Agenzia Fides) - At the end of a peaceful demonstration carried out by high school and university students that took place yesterday in the Chilean capital, a group of masked young men entered the church of Gratitud Nacional, in the center of Santiago, breaking the door and brought out the image of the crucified Jesus, about three meters high, to destroy it in the main street of the city. The march was organized by the Confederación de Estudiantes de Chile (Confech) which was attended by about 150 thousand students to ask for changes in the current law on public education in the country.
According to information sent to Fides, the National Coordinator of Confech condemned the sacrilegious act, saying that the fact "does not represent the ideal of the student movement". The newly appointed Minister of the Interior, on his first day of work, said: "I want to express the condemnation on behalf of the government of such acts. What we have seen is a very disturbing symptom of what some people get to do in our country".
"It is a very painful situation for us - said the Auxiliary Bishop of Santiago, His Exc. Mgr. Luis Fernando Ramos Pérez. – A religious icon of great value to us has been destroyed and we do not want this to happen again in our country". (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 10/06/2016)
