Niamey (Agenzia Fides) - The first Chadian soldiers of a contingent of 2,000 soldiers sent to Niger to counter the offensive of the Boko Haram Islamist sect from Nigeria borders arrived in the town of Bosso, Niger.
In Bosso, on the shores of Lake Chad, clashes between troops of Niger and Nigerian Islamists have been going on for days. Bosso had been conquered by Boko Haram on June 3. On June 4, the army of Niamey had regained control but the next day it was back in the hands of Boko Haram.
In the fighting 30 regular Nigerian and Nigerien soldiers were killed, while 50,000 residents of the city were forced to flee. Their conditions are desperate: there is no help and there is an arid and very hot climate, among them there are many children, women and elderly. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 09/06/2016)
