Amman (Agenzia Fides) - "The atrocious assault" perpetrated by gunmen against the General Intelligence Department deployed at the Baqaa refugee camp, which claimed the lives of five employees of the General Intelligence Department, is a serious and worrying sign, but will definitely increase the Jordanian people’s firm and dedicated rallying around the Hashemite leadership, the Jordan Armed Forces and the security apparatuses. This is what Churches in Jordan said in a statement issued on June 8, 2016, condemning the terrorist attack.
The criminal act - the statement reads - will further strengthen their determination to confront extremism and terrorism. "We, the Christian Jordanians - said the statement, sent to Fides, and also signed by Archbishop Maroun Laham, Patriarchal Vicar for Jordan of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem - serve as an impregnable bulwark and stand firmly behind the wise Hashemite leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein, and all our security services wherever they are stationed, in the face of any attempt to jeopardize Jordan’s security and stability".
The attack on the Jordanian intelligence Department in Baqaa refugee camp took place while they were on duty on June 6, coinciding with the first day of the holy month of Ramadan. The attack claimed the lives of five office employees (including three service agents), and concluded with the arrest of two members of the commando.
Baqaa camp, in the north of Amman, is home to 70 thousand Palestinian refugees, most of whom arrived after 1967. (GV) (Agenzia Fides 09/06/2016)
