Wednesday, 1 June 2016 missionaries

Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) – Fr. Egide Safari, treasurer of the parish of Mambasa, in the Eastern Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has denounced the fact of having received death threats with leaflets left in front of the door of his room, in which $ 500 are asked otherwise the priest will be killed later today, 1 June. According to Radio Okapi, which reported the news, last week some bandits had attacked another priest, within the complex of the parish. The authorities of Mambasa Territory have called a safety committee meeting to adopt measures of protection of the priests of the area.
In the neighboring province of North Kivu, Fr. Vincent Machozi, Assumptionist priest was killed on March 20, who for years denounced the illegal exploitation of coltan (see Fides 22/03/2016), while a priest of the Order of the Clerics Regular Minor (Adorno Fathers) was seriously wounded in a road ambush (see 21/03/2016).
In the two provinces in the northeast of the DRC there are several guerrilla groups and numerous street gangs, and often the line between the two is actually very weak if not totally non-existent. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 01/06/2016)
