VATICAN - General Assembly of the Pontifical Mission Societies begins May 30

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – The Annual General Assembly of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS), begins on Monday, May 30 at the House of the Salesians, in Rome. The National Directors of the PMS from all continents, with the President and the General Secretaries of the four Societies will gather for their annual meeting that includes the "Pastoral Days" (30 and 31 May) on the theme "To awaken the consciousness of mission today . The PMS at the service of young Churches"; a day dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Pontifical Missionary Union (June 1) and the ordinary session of the Assembly (June 2,3,4).
The Assembly will be opened by Archbishop His Exc. Mgr. Protase Rugambwa, Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and President of the PMS, with the usual formalities, and the introduction to the work in workshops. On the afternoon of May 30 the report of Cardinal Fernando Filoni, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, and Archbishop Rugambwa. On the following day, work in workshops, debates, continental meetings.
Wednesday, June 1 will be dedicated to the celebration of the centenary of the Pontifical Missionary Union (PMU), with a visit to Ducenta (Aversa), where Blessed Paolo Manna, a priest of the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (1872-1952), founder of the PMU is buried. The Eucharistic concelebration will be presided by Cardinal Filoni.
On Thursday, June 2 the Ordinary Session of the Assembly will begin, during which the General Secretaries of the four Pontifical Mission Societies will present the report of the past year, the forecast of the budget and subsidies requested for projects received: General Secretary of the Pontifical Society for the Propagation of Faith, Fr. Ryszard Szmydki, OMI; General Secretary of the Pontifical Society of St. Peter the Apostle, Fr. Fernando Domingues, MCCJ; Ms. J. Baptistine Ralamboarison, General Secretary of the Pontifical Society of Missionary Childhood; Fr. Fabrizio Meroni, PIME, General Secretary of the Pontifical Missionary Union and Director of CIAM. The final report will be held by Mgr. Carlo Soldateschi, in charge of the Administration.
On Friday, June 3 the speech of the President of the PMS, Mgr. Rugambwa will close the works. On Saturday, June 4 audience with the Holy Father. (SL) (Agenzia Fides 28/05/2016)
