Dakar (Agenzia Fides) - "Do politicians really care to put themselves at the service of the city?" wonders His Exc. Mgr. Benjamin Ndiaye, Archbishop of Dakar and President of the Episcopal Conference of Senegal, in response to those who asked his opinion on the national dialogue promoted by President Macky Sall.
"If national dialogue focuses on the interest of the City then it is worth it, but if it is an initiative to promote partisan and individual interests, it is not dialogue, it is fraud" said Mgr. Ndiaye during a meeting with journalists at the end of the Assembly of Senegalese Bishops, held on the occasion of the Marian pilgrimage to the shrine in Poponguine.
The Archbishop of Dakar nevertheless welcomed the initiative of the Head of the State and expressed the hope that this "will serve to calm down the tensions". Mgr. Ndiaye also criticized the excessive number of parties present on the Senegalese political scene: "How can a small Country like Senegal have more than 250 political parties? Is this democracy? No, the policy is to serve the city and not take advantage of it".
National dialogue opens on May 28. President Sall has invited people from the political, economic, religious and civil society world to participate. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 23/05/2016)
