Colombo (Agenzia Fides) - The death toll in Sri Lanka following the violent floods which have been ravaging the country for one week continues to increase. We are talking about the heaviest rains recorded in the last twenty-five years that have caused severe landslides and buried entire villages under meters of mud. Currently there are about 500,000 internally displaced persons who have been welcomed in the homes of relatives, schools and religious institutions. Aid continues to arrive from various Countries around the world such as the USA, India, China, Pakistan and Australia who are engaged in recovery operations, in particular in the area of Kegale, where several people have died and hundreds are still trapped, and in the capital, Colombo, where several homes continue to be submerged in mud.
