El Paso (Agenzia Fides) - Hundreds of Cubans, who were arrested earlier in Panama, are arriving in El Paso, Texas, border area in the United States, and now this city is on the verge of collapsing and there are no more resources to support them financially.
According to a note received by Fides, the Bishop of the Diocese of El Paso, His Exc. Mgr. Mark Joseph Seitz, said: "We are concerned about them and we think it is the government’s responsibility, especially the federal government, to communicate with us about these people and in some way help us to assist them".
Mgr. Seitz recalled that Houchen social center is the only center authorized at a local level to welcome Cuban migrants, that only here they can receive a monthly support of $ 445 and get a work permit, but with the massive arrival of so many migrants it is no longer possible to guarantee this.
For several days, reports the note, daily flights carrying Cubans from Panama to Ciudad Juarez arrive, and soon after they move to El Paso. The Bishop also reported to the local press that the majority of Cubans who arrived are destined to go to Houston or Miami, but at least 10 percent of them cannot continue the journey without help.
Some 3,000 Cubans are expected to arrive this week and next week in Ciudad Juarez and El Paso, and the diocese of El Paso asks for the support of all. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 16/05/2016)
