AMERICA/VENEZUELA - The crisis worsens, the first attempts to leave the country towards the Netherlands Antilles

Willemstad (Agenzia Fides) - Angel Ramirez, President of the Red Cross of Curacao, the largest island of the Netherlands Antilles, which is situated in front of Venezuela, said that they are preparing to receive other Venezuelan refugees. "Recently there has been much attention on this issue. In particular on the issue of asylum seekers, on refugees, immigrants (...) We have been working on this, although it is not part of our specific responsibility, but working as Red Cross also means giving assistance and seeking to raise funds", said Ramirez to the web portal of Curacao Chronicle.
According to head of the Red Cross, since the crisis in Venezuela continues to deteriorate, one must not be "astounded" if Venezuelans try to emigrate towards Curacao, although here they "do not have the possibility to help everyone".
The note sent to Fides from a local Catholic source highlights the difficult situation that the country lives, to the point that some groups do everything they can to leave: the press reported the discovery of a corpse of a Venezuelan on the beaches of Aruba, the other island in front of Venezuela, who apparently died in an effort to reach this island by boat.
Meanwhile there have been violent clashes of the population in search of food supplies in Venezuela. A crowd ransacked a store when it was announced that goods were no longer available and the Bolivarian National Guard had to intervene. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 13/05/2016)
