Santiago (Agenzia Fides) - The Archbishop of Santiago de los Caballeros, His Exc. Mgr. Freddy Antonio de Jesús Bretón Martínez, and the Bishop of Puerto Plata, His Exc. Mgr. Julio Cesar Corniel Amaro, expressed the hope that next Sunday's elections in the Dominican Republic are carried out peacefully and in an atmosphere worthy of a civilized society. The two Bishops met yesterday for the press to express their best wishes for the welfare of the Dominican family.
According to information sent to Fides, the Archbishop of Santiago said that, as Pastors, we expect to live a democratic day, without violent incidents. Mgr. Corniel Amaro invited the entire community in his diocese to participate in this election. "Next Sunday we will celebrate the feast of Pentecost, which is the fulfillment of the promise that Jesus made to his disciples, that He would send the Holy Spirit as the comforter for the afflicted, and on this day general elections are held in our country" he commented.
On Sunday, May 15, both in the country and abroad, presidential and legislative elections will be held. According to the polls, the candidate of the Dominican Liberation Party (LDP), currently in power, is ahead with respect to its opponent of the modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). Unfortunately, the climate in the country is not peaceful, due to protests of the opposition and contrasts with the United States, accused of interference in the vote.
