AMERICA/MEXICO - Ensuring the safety of people in Veracruz

Veracruz (Agenzia Fides) - "In Veracruz an immediate response mechanism to the disappearance of a person, without having to wait 72 hours to submit the complaint is needed", said the Bishop of Córdoba (Veracruz, Mexico), His Exc. Mgr. Eduardo Patiño Leal talking to the community after the celebration of the feast of the Holy Cross, on May 2.
"We know that in other places in the country, one can find people alive if we intervene immediately. The authorities must ensure that these crimes do not happen. Unfortunately not only they continue to happen, but they increase, which is why we pray for the authorities, so they can find appropriate solutions to these tragedies", added the Bishop according to the note sent to Agenzia Fides.
"We must ensure the safety of the people of Veracruz and not to continue to see cases of disappearances increase", concluded Mgr. Patiño Leal.
The Church in this area has had to adapt to the widespread situation of threats or violence: in many parishes Sunday Mass in the evening at 8 pm has been anticipated "for security reasons". Even in small rural villages and on the outskirts, where the faithful walk a few hours to get to the church, we celebrate Mass in the morning rather than the afternoon, for fear of being victims of some criminal group.
