AMERICA/CHILE - Mgr. Chomali after the churches burned: "The Mapuche issue is a political issue"

Concepcion (Agenzia Fides) - The Archbishop of Concepción, His Exc. Mgr. Fernando Chomali, who worked with the Mapuche people for several years, interviewed by the local press after churches were set on fire in past days (see Fides 13/04/2016) claimed by defenders of the Mapuche cause, believes that the government, the police, prosecutors and judges "are informed about the specific events that are happening, but fail to recognize that this is a political problem, which requires a definition of the State on the treatment of the Mapuche people".
Mgr. Chomali notes that "the lack of employment, poor education and the unsolved problems of land ownership" are the fundamental difficulties. "There is a general malaise in the area due to the precarious situation of its people" said the Archbishop, reiterating that "rebuilding trust, justice for the Mapuche people and peace, is a matter which will take time and requires immediate clear and visible state policies".
