AMERICA/VENEZUELA - Amnesty law: the relatives of political prisoners call for the intervention of the Pope

Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - A group of family members of Venezuela's political prisoners chained themselves yesterday afternoon at the entrance gate of the Apostolic Nunciature in Caracas, demanding the intervention of the Holy Father with regards to the amnesty law.
Congress, where the opposition has the majority, approved the amnesty law and reconciliation on March 29. President Nicolas Maduro, who has until this week to enact the law, opposed because he says it violates the Venezuelan law.
"Chains mean the sadness and loneliness of children left without their parents. We appeal to the President to put a hand over his heart and accept the amnesty", said Marilu Guevara, mother of Lt. Peter Moreno, according to information sent to Fides.
A group of about 11 relatives of detainees handed over a document to the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Mgr. Aldo Giordano, who also listened to their requests, without releasing any comment to the press. "We have come to ask our Latin American Pope to intercede so that the amnesty law and thus the release of all innocent political prisoners is approved. Our children at home are waiting for their loved ones" said Elkys Arellano, wife of lawyer Marcelo Croatian.
