Buenos Aires (Agenzia Fides) - A "significant deterioration" of poverty was registered in Argentina in the first quarter of 2016: is what the latest report of the social debt observatory (ODSA) of the Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA) said, based on a set of indicators covering the basic food basket and other factors of social policy. The rate of poverty rose from 5.3% at the end of 2015 to 6.9% in March this year, amounting to 2.3 million people in need. The poverty rate in the same period, increased from 29% to 34.5%, which implies that about 13 million people live in poverty.
The report "Pobreza y desigualdad en la Argentina urbana 2010-2015" (Poverty and inequality in urban Argentina 2010-2015), presented recently to UCA, takes stock of the rates of poverty studied over time, considering the high inflation during the period and political assistance to the most vulnerable sectors. The poverty rate of families and the population level fell between 2010 and 2013, remained stable in 2014, while between 2014 and 2015 showed a slightly decreasing trend. The poverty rate reported a significant decrease between 2010 and 2011, while between 2012 and 2015 increased up to 29% of the population. (SL) (Agenzia Fides 04/04/2016)
