Cairo (Agenzia Fides) - The court for misdemeanors in Cairo rejected the appeal that the famous writer and Egyptian blogger Fatima Naoot had filed against the conviction for the crime of blasphemy issued against her in January. The writer had been sentenced to three years in prison and payment of a fine of 20 thousand Egyptian pounds ($ 2,550) for criticizing the Islamic practice of sacrificing lambs, calves and sheep each year on the occasion of Eid al Adha, the "feast of sacrifice".
The writer, currently on tour in Canada, is the second Egyptian public figure convicted of blasphemy in recent months. Last December it was the turn of Beheri, Islam researcher, who had expressed judgments considered offensive to Islam.
The sentences of five years' imprisonment imposed in February to four Coptic students remain confirmed, accused of insulting the Islamic religion due to the spreading, in the spring of 2015, of a video clip, in which the scene of the slaughter of a faithful Muslim in an attitude of prayer, in imitation of the horrible executions committed by jihadists of the Islamic State (Daesh) was mimicked. The Egyptian Ministry of Justice had promised to reconsider the court case (see Fides 08/03/2016). (GV) (Agenzia Fides 01/04/2016)
