Lima (Agenzia Fides) – About 348 thousand tons of food is wasted every day in Latin America and the Caribbean, which would be enough to feed 37 percent of the world's population suffering from hunger. This clearly appears from a recent report of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on the situation in Latin America and the Caribbean, and sent to Fides, in which it is explained that 36 million people in the region could meet their calorie needs with food that is wasted in direct sales to consumers: this figure corrisponds to more than the total population of Peru and to all people who suffer from hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The report shows that each year 127 million tons of food is wasted, 223 pounds per inhabitant, which would be enough to meet the food needs of 300 million people worldwide; although it is an alarming problem, FAO attests that the region is working to reduce losses. To reverse this situation, local governments, with the support of the organization, have established a network of experts, a regional strategy and a regional Alliance to address the problem.
The report concludes with an appeal launched by FAO, in which it is highlighted that the fight against food waste is the main part of the plan for food security, nutrition and eradication of hunger in Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 01/04/2016)
