Lima (Agenzia Fides) – In view of the presidential elections in the country, scheduled for April 10, and due to the recent statements made by some Bishops regarding the candidates in this election, the Permanent Council of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference (CEP) yesterday published, March 30, a note, also sent to Fides.
The statement highlights that the Church "recognizes the value of democracy" and promotes the free exercise of the right to vote of citizens, and calls to do it "in a conscious and responsible manner", and candidates are asked "to work for the common good, respecting political and social pluralism".
The statement finally recalls that candidates must "have a realistic plan of government", it is also necessary "to reject corrupt and opportunist candidates; assess the electoral promises and funding sources, verify the commitment of the candidates in the defense of life and the care for creation".
A few days before the presidential elections of April 10, Keiko Fujimori (former President's daughter) remains favored in the polls, followed by Pedro Pablo Kucyznski, Alfredo Barnechea and Veronika Mendoza. Under current rules, general elections in Peru are held every five years. The President and the Vice-President of the Republic are elected by direct, secret and compulsory suffrage.
