Sao Gabriel da Cachoeira - (Agenzia Fides) - The Daughters of St. Mary of Providence, known as the Guanellians by their founder, the Italian priest Saint Luigi Guanella, will open a mission in one of the poorest areas of natural resources of the Amazon and the most neglected by state authorities.
The nuns have accepted the invitation of the Bishop of the Diocese of São Gabriel da Cachoeira, His Exc. Mgr. Taschetto Edson Damian.
According to information sent to Fides, the superior of the Guanellian Province of Our Lady Aparecida had visited the area last September. Three nuns, after completing a course in Manaus on the Amazon culture, are now in Cucui, in the diocese of San Gabriel da Cachoeira, in order to begin the new mission.
The diocese is in a northern region of Brazil which borders with Colombia and Venezuela. The area where the Guanellian religious work can be reached by boat. Among the major problems of this area: natural obstacles and unfavorable climate, distance from town centers, and the abandonment by the state. The population, about 37,000 inhabitants on a territory of 109 181 km2, survives on agriculture. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 30/03/2016)
