Seoul (Agenzia Fides) - A witness of public faith, with a Christian message in the streets, and an appeal for the gift of peace on the Korean peninsula: is the initiative launched by young people in Seoul who experienced the procession of Palm Sunday in one of the most elegant and renowned areas of the capital, Hongdae area, an area frequented by many young Koreans.
The initiative was organized by the Department for Youth in the Archdiocese of Seoul, and was also meant to celebrate Youth Day. For the first time the procession with songs, prayers and readings from the Gospel traveled the city streets.
Fr. Chang Won-suk, the organizer of the event said the event was a great opportunity for "street evangelization". "We wanted to do something out of the ordinary", he said, "to increase the interest of young people, Catholic or non-Catholic, and help them to experience the mercy of Christ".
At the end of the event, His Exc. Mgr. Peter Chung Soon-taek, Auxiliary Bishop of Seoul, celebrated Holy Mass, stressing that "Lent is the season of mercy". All those present raised a heartfelt prayer for peace on the Korean peninsula, asking God's blessing on Korea and the gift of reconciliation and "mercy in the hearts", in view of Easter.
The Catholic population in Korea is 10.6%; the percentage rises to 15% in the Archdiocese of Seoul. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 22/03/2016)
