Yangon (Agenzia Fides) - In 2012, Burma had agreed with the United Nations not to recruit minors among the militias. However, according to the local media, the Armed Forces of the Country did not respect the agreement. This week the government newspaper Global Light of Myanmar reported that the Army has just rescued 46 minors returning them to their families. The authorities of the Country, subjected to a military dictatorship from 1962 to 2011, does not provide reliable data on the number of children being recruited in the army. In 2002, Myanmar was the country which had the highest number of child soldiers around the world. According to some estimates, in 2012, when the Country pledged to put an end to this practice, the figure was around 5000. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 15/03/2016)
