Pucallpa (Agenzia Fides) - In a statement, the Bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Pucallpa, His Exc. Mgr. Gaetano Galbusera Fumagalli, SDB, together with his priests, have asked citizens to remain calm and seek dialogue, within the framework of the general strike, still in progress, which is taking place in the region of Ucayali.
The popular protest against rising electricity prices, drinking water and other basic necessities began six days ago with small demonstrations, now there are many who protest in the streets and with them, unfortunately there are groups of vandals who incite violence. The police controls many roads but the situation remains tense.
According to the note sent to Fides, it is the population who pays the price of this situation. Not only is there tension but also lack of freedom of movement, due to vandalism and the presence of the police to stop these thugs.
"Strike is everyone’s right, but it should be held in a democratic and a peaceful way. It hurts us and we are concerned that a strike becomes a situation of citizen disorder that harms the common good and respect for the dignity of people. We, as a Church, appeal to put an end to the strike and proceed to establish dialogue", the document states.
Mgr. Galbusera has also invited everyone, today, March 15, to a Mass in the Cathedral in Pucallpa to pray together for a speedy solution of the problem, to avoid violence and to return to calm. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 15/03/2016)
