Asuncion (Agenzia Fides) - In the last three years there have been several deaths of children who were working as domestic servants in Paraguay, because of abuse at the hands of the same employers. It is a "culturally accepted" phenomenon: in the Country, in fact it is normal for a minor to do domestic work and also the families of origin are convinced that their children will live in better living conditions.
According to the Secretariat for Childhood and Adolescence (SNNA), it is a form of domestic exploitation of children and adolescents. In January 2016 alone already 12 complaints have been registered, a figure previously reported in 2014. The official figures show that in Paraguay over 46,000 children and adolescents from poor families work for wealthy households and receive room and board. Over 80% of the victims are girls and adolescent women, between 9 to 17 years of age. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 11/03/2016)
