AFRICA/UGANDA - Motobike-ambulance service guarantees assisted delivery to more than 200 mothers a month

Oyam (Agenzia Fides) – Guaranteeing assisted delivery to mothers in Oyam district in Uganda, is the mission chosen by the Italian organization Medici con l’Africa CUAMM (Doctors with Africa) on occasion of this year’s International Women’s Day on 8 March. Fides learned that the organization guarantees Motor-Bike Ambulance transport for more than 200 mothers a month from the remote area of Abela and Otwal, to the nearest hospital. Records speak of 700 motorbike ambulance hospital transfers for obstetric emergencies to Aber Hospital the only one for a population of 388,000. “We follow the practical aspects to guarantee the service continuity, - CUAMM tells Fides-, supplying 23 outlying medical centres with the necessary telephone credit to enable staff to contact the hospital in cases of serious danger. Moreover to encourage assisted delivery, involving the local community we have extended the distribution of vouchers to six outlying healthcare centres, these vouchers, equivalent to the value of 3 euro, enable mothers to avail themselves of assisted delivery at no cost”.
