ASIA/CHINA – The Word of God and Mercy accompany Chinese Catholics along the path of Lent

Beijing (Agenzia Fides) – Misericordiae Vultus, the Bull of Indiction for this extraordinary Holy Year, the word of God and works of charity are accompanying Chinese Catholics in the various communities in Mainland China. According to information collected by Fides, Pope’s Francis’ Misericordiae Vultus was the central theme of a spiritual retreat held in the parish of Xuan Hua, He Bei province. During 4 days of spiritual sharing, 24-27 February, the local priests explained the history of Jubilee years, the meaning of God’s mercy, encouraging the faithful to be reconciled with the all merciful Father and with neighbour experiencing Mercy on the path towards Easter.
On the feast day of the Chair of Peter, 22 February, which is also the date of traditional Lantern Feast to end festivities for the Lunar New Year , Bishop Wu Qin Jing, of the diocese of Zhou Zhi in Shaan Xi province, ordained two new deacons in the presence of thousands of faithful. These two new workers for the Lord’s vineyard represent a motive of joy and confidence for the diocese already fully engaged in fruitful pastoral activity and evangelisation.
At St Teresa parish in Beijing on the second Sunday of Lent Scrutinies were held for 10 catechumens preparing for the Sacraments of Christian Initiation at Easter. The oldest catechumen is 80 years old and the youngest is age 30. All ten frequented catechism lessons, and meditation on the Word of God, while their path was accompanied by the fervent prayers of the parish community.
The Catholic community of Chang in Si Chuan province, organised a course of Lenten formation for young people during China’s new year holidays 10 to 22 February, on the theme of “Misericordia”. And the end of the course on the Feast of the Chair of Peter during a solemn celebration of Mass the priest reflected on the intimate bonds between faith and daily life, between the spirituality of Mercy and works of charity.
