Accra (Agenzia Fides) - "Countless heartbreaking stories of development plans torn apart and destroyed homes come from different areas of Africa and the world, all because inhabitants were not able to forgive and forget when this was the thing mattered most", said the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, in front of 150 Catholic Bishops gathered in Accra for the Plenary Assembly of RECOWA- CERAO.
President Mahama commended the Catholic Church in the region, that with its action shows that cultural and language barriers can be overcome when people work steadfastly to achieve unity.
Unity which in Africa is being challenged by national, tribal, clan and community divisions, which in many cases result in violence, said the Ghanaian President.
Mgr. Joseph Osei-Bonsu, Bishop of Konongo-Mampong and President of the Episcopal Conference of Ghana, responded by urging the Church leaders in the region to reflect on how to "work together as one family, and in partnership with African Western governments to progress on the issues of reconciliation, integral development and authentic family life".
