AFRICA/SOUTH SUDAN - Mobile clinic campaigns to help the displaced

Lui (Agenzia Fides) - CUAMM’s commitment to assist the displaced in Mundri East County, South Sudan, continues. CUAMM is working tirelessly in cooperation with local authorities to manage surgical and obstetric emergencies at the Lui Hospital, as well as providing medicines and other materials.
Working together with local health authorities was essential to assess the situation of the displaced population and have discovered that some 14,000 displaced individuals, mainly from Mideh, Buagyi, Lanyi and Lui, have migrated to the Lozoh and Witto payams, houses, markets and health units had been looted. The subsequent overcrowding has led to an increase in cases of malaria and diarrhea due in part to the precarious hygienic conditions.
In a note sent to Agenzia Fides, Fabio Manenti, a doctor and head of Doctors with Africa Cuamm recently in mission in South Sudan, said: "in such a fragile and difficult environment, our commitment as Cuamm is to bring help to the poorest. I think about the displaced in Lui, who for months have been without food reserves, away from the attention of the world's leaders, but so real and tangible for our doctors, nurses, aid workers engaged in the front line". Faced with this serious humanitarian crisis, CUAMM has planned an intervention aimed at both the community and the health units in the County. Since last October a team of the hospital staff in Lui, vaccinators and operators of local health units, have realized mobile clinic campaigns to bring material goods to the displaced and engage them in health education meetings and immunizations. Although the situation remains unstable, it is now slightly less difficult to carry out regular activities both on the ground and in the Lui Hospital. There have been encouraging signals from the community, as well; those who have fled their homes are gradually returning and even staying throughout the night. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 26/02/2016)
