Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) - The various social sectors that make up the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) of Haiti have begun to nominate their new representatives in this body, following the resignation of six of the nine delegates, which occurred in the middle of a political crisis in the country (see Fides 04/02/2016, 08/02/2016). This was reported to Fides by a local source.
The media will be represented by Leopold Berlager, who had been part of the CEP between 2013 and 2014. The Protestant church has appointed Dr. Fritznel Joseph. The followers of voodoo have chosen Euvonie Georges Auguste.
The unions have decided to continue with Edith Joseph, one of the three members of the CEP who had not resigned, and the university sector has ratified Marie Carmel Paul Austin. Even the Catholic Church has appointed its representative, lawyer Carlos Hercule.
According to agency information, yesterday evening, interim President, Jocelerme Privert, met with new representatives of the sectors members of the Electoral Council. "We are doing what we can to give the country a government and electoral Council", said the President. During the meeting it was agreed to grant another 48 hours to the areas that have problems with the election of their representatives, including women's groups, the employers' sector and that of human rights. The establishment of the Provisional Electoral Council is an important step for the organization of the second round of the presidential elections on April 24 and the establishment of the new government on May 14.
