AMERICA/PANAMA - The Cathedral of Colon reopens, the living reality of the population’s faith

Colon (Agenzia Fides) - After more than five years, one of the most important places of worship and religious monuments of the Panamanian province of Colon reopens its doors to thousands of faithful: we are talking about the Immaculate Conception Cathedral. The building, dates back to 1929 and was completed in 1934, is one of the jewels of Gothic architecture in Central America and heritage of the history of Panama. Unfortunately a number of damages forced the closure in 2011 in order to carry out the restructuring.
The restoration of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, in American neo-Gothic style, was full and complete: ceilings, walls, stairs, interior and exterior walls. The materials used were the original ones, such as Italian marble floors, thanks to the work of skilled craftsmen of the province of Colon.
On December 8, 2015, feast of the Immaculate Conception, the place of worship was reopened even if more than 30% of the renovation work had to still be completed.
On that occasion, the Bishop of the Diocese of Colón and Guna Yala, His Exc. Mgr. Manuel Ochogavia had said: "Today life inside this home which is ours begins, this should mark the commitment to live so that this house does not become a nice house or a museum to be admired, but a living reality animated by the faith of the faithful".
