Santo Domingo (Agenzia Fides) - The Dominican Episcopal Conference issued a message on Independence Day, February 27th, with the title "Upcoming elections and other urgent matters" ("Próximas elecciones y otras urgencias").
In the text, in 25 points, the Bishops call for a serious reflection on the situation of the country before choosing the right candidates in the upcoming general elections on May 15. After a series of "considerations" they present different requests to the entire national community: to carry out an election campaign in peace, to go and vote with citizen awareness, to give confidence to the central election Commission for the organization of this event. "We have to be jealous and vigilant on our democracy", reads the text.
The Bishops also point out the need to include all Dominicans in health care, because "there are many vulnerable patients who do not have the economic resources to address their health situation".
The note sent to Agenzia Fides, reports that the President of the Central Electoral Commission, Roberto Rosario Márquez, thanked the Dominican Episcopal Conference for having enhanced the role of this institution and for having launched an appeal to society and political parties to support and welcome the results of the elections on May 15. "The Catholic Church and the nation can be sure that this process will take place with respect and reliability, our human and material resources allow us to state that we are ready to do it well" emphasized Rosario Márquez.
