Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - Cardinal Jorge Urosa Savino, Archbishop of Caracas, urged "in the name of God", to "fight for the defense of life of all people, to promote the common good, leaving aside personal interests or interests related to their party, and to work for the promotion of a better life, especially for the poorest".
This is what is stated in the message from the Cardinal titled "Mercy and conversion", published on the occasion of Lent, which was read on Sunday, February 14 in all the churches, addressed to all the Catholic faithful of the archdiocese and the whole civil community.
In the message, sent to Fides, Cardinal Urosa calls on the authorities with "wisdom, strength and courage" to "apply our laws" and put a definitive end "to crimes without criminals". Referring to the fact that in Venezuela many acts of vandalism and many crimes do not have a culprit or criminals are never caught. At the same time it encourages security officials "not to give up in the fight against crime, always with respect for human rights; and never abuse the power and the weapons delivered to them by the State".
In his Lenten message, the Archbishop of Caracas highlighted that Venezuelans "suffer the weakness of the courts to punish crimes and offenses, and the inability of the authorities to solve the horror of overcrowding prisons". He then considers the conversion of people's lives "urgent", "given the advance of secularism, ie religious indifference and oblivion and rejection of God", and to reject vices and defects "such as violence and hatred, corruption, waste and laziness".
