ASIA/PHILIPPINES - Bishops' Message: "During Lent rediscover chastity"

Friday, 12 February 2016

Manila (Agenzia Fides) - "Created for love, created for chastity": is the title of the message of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines who express their concern regarding the phenomenon of pornography.
The message, signed by the President of the Episcopal Conference, His Exc. Mgr. Socrates Villegas, Archbishop of Lingayen Dagupan, touches one of the social urgencies that concerns observers, civil society and church organizations. Thanks to new media, and in particular the web, in fact, pornographic material is widespread among adolescents and young people in the Philippines. The Bishops note with concern that pornography is "a serious scourge that harms not only the individual" and especially young people, but the whole society, and invite to abandon the grave sin of "production and consumption of pornography".
In the Year of Mercy, the medicine for the human heart, is "the healing power of Christ who is the face of mercy" says the Bishops’ text. A message of hope and redemption of ones dignity goes, first and foremost, "to the victims, exploited by the pornographic industry"; a warning reaches those who produce and distribute pornographic material, which give "scandal to the little ones"; an encouragement goes to those who "are fighting against the temptation of pornography consumption", calling for reconciliation with God, accepting his forgiveness and his grace to live chastity to which the Gospel calls every Christian".
