Nuevo Leon (Agenzia Fides) - A prayer for the victims of Topo Chico was asked by His Exc. Mgr. Rogelio Cabrera López, Archbishop of Monterrey, after the riot and fire broke out on the night between 10 and 11 February, in the Rehabilitation Center, in Nuevo Leon. In the statement released yesterday, sent to Fides, the Archbishop writes: "We invite the whole community to join us in prayer for our brothers who are being held and for their families, who live moments of anguish for what has happened (...), we speak of human losses and serious injuries".
The governor of Nuevo Leon corrected the death toll to 49, while a first report spoke of 52 victims. No prisoner has escaped. He had to admit that some detainees died from the blows of firearms. The cause of the revolt was the clash between two gangs, after one of them had burned the food storehouse. 12 are seriously injured and a group of prisoners was transferred to another penitentiary center.
Topo Chico prison is the oldest in the area, dating back to 1943, and has been reported by some NGOs to be one of the busiest in the country and where there is a situation of lack of security.
The National Commission on Human Rights has asked to immediately open an investigation on the case. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 12/02/2016)
