La Guajira (Agenzia Fides) - The state of abandonment and food insecurity and water supplies for the Wayuu children continues (see Fides 18/12/2015). On December 17th, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) was forced to urge the Colombian government to take urgent measures to protect the children of La Guajira. Since the beginning of 2016, 6 children have already died of hunger and it is estimated that 90% of the Wayuu suffer cyclical food insecurity.
The indigenous leaders have urged IACHR to protect the children's health. The national government announced nutritional recovery programs for 7,000 children, while the census of the community shows that 34,000 children are severely malnourished. Equally alarming are the complaints of the population on the situation of abandonment of Guajira children who starve to death while unscrupulous individuals steal the resources provided by assistance programs and destined to children.
