La Guajira (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishop of Riohacha, His Exc. Mgr. Héctor Ignacio Salah Zuleta, denounced that the main scourge in the region of La Guajira is the corruption of the political class. The Bishop informed the press that he was asked to pay to renew contracts for the management of school canteens.
In his homily, strong and direct, for the feast of the "Virgen de los Remedios" celebrated yesterday February 2, Mgr. Salah Zuleta said that before drought or organized crime, corruption is killing children: "Corruption is the main scourge plaguing La Guajira, where there is a humanitarian crisis with dozens of children who have died because of malnutrition".
Then he added: "to correct this wrong path and work honestly, the corrupt must pay damages, because only then there will be social justice and transparency in this region". "It is true that not all politicians are corrupt, but we must stop those who are" said the Bishop.
In the region, he said, the Catholic Church follows approximately 40,000 children in its schools, including the management of school canteens with "transparent contracts". "When they asked me to pay to renew contracts I said: how can you steal money that belongs to children?". Two days before Mgr. Salah Zuleta had denounced the fact to the press.
