Ho Chi Minh City (Agenzia Fides) - The newborn "Catholic Institute of Vietnam", the first Catholic institution at university level in the country, opens its doors and welcomes its first students in September 2016: is what the Episcopal Commission for Education of the Episcopal Conference of Vietnam announced, publishing the calendar for the entrance exams to the new institution, which for now will be temporarily located in the building of the Episcopal Conference in Ho Chi Minh City.
The statement, sent to Agenzia Fides, reports that theology courses will begin in mid-September 2016 in two branches: Biblical theology and dogmatic theology. The requirements set by the commission for application to either programme include a letter of presentation from a Bishop or the superior general of the applicant’s congregation of reference, and evidence of having studied philosophy and theology in a major seminary or religious institution.
The President of the Episcopal Commission for Education, His Exc. Mgr. Joseph Din Duc Dao, expressed to Agenzia Fides his "deep satisfaction because the project fell through, with the approval of the Vietnamese government and the Holy See".
The Catholic universities were closed by the communist regime in 1975. In the following years the Church of Vietnam had asked the government the possibility to resume the efforts in education. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 1/2/2016)
