ASIA/INDIA - The Bishops of Kerala meet political and social leaders

Thursday, 28 January 2016

Kochi (Agenzia Fides) - To understand the perspectives and ideas of the various political parties and civil society organizations; express the views of the Church on social and political issues: with these intentions the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council will hold a series of meetings with various stakeholders in the political and social life of Kerala, ahead of the Assembly elections likely to be held in April.
As reported to Fides, Fr. Jimmy Poochakkad, spokesman of the Syro-Malabar Church in Kerala, explained that these meetings, which will begin in late January, are part "of the exercise and pastoral solicitude of the Church to understand the perspectives of various sections of the society in which he lives". The Bishops will meet political leaders, intellectuals, activists of social organizations, heads of associations promoting the rights of Dalits and tribals, representatives of trade unions and different social classes. Special attention, remarked Fr. Poochakkad, will be dedicated "to the most marginalized sections of the society". (PA) (Agenzia Fides 28/01/2016)
