Cruz del Eje (Agenzia Fides) - "Cura Brochero worked for us, for our human progress" said His Exc. Mgr. Santiago Olivera, Bishop of the Diocese of Argentina in Cruz del Eje, commenting on the news of the upcoming canonization of the priest. On Friday, January 22 Pope Francis in fact authorized the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to publish a decree to approve the second miracle attributed to Brochero, regarding the case of a 9-year-old girl out of coma after 45 days.
Mgr. Olivera recalled that José Gabriel del Rosario Brochero "was a priest close to his people", stressing the "moment of joy" that is lived in Cordoba, land where he lived and worked, with regards to the news of his canonization and the fact that he will become the first saint who was born and died in Argentina. "Brochero was a priest close to his people and went with his mule from town to town", said Mgr. Olivera, who is the Vice Postulator of the Cause of Canonization.
"Cura" Brochero (1840-1914) was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI at the end of 2012, although his cause of canonization had already been authorized in 1967. The first saint born in Argentina is San Hector Valdivielso Saez, also known as San Benito de Jesus (1910-1934), who at the age of four was taken away from his parents in Spain, where he died during the Asturias revolution, before the Spanish Civil War.
