AFRICA/KENYA - The Bishops: "Pray for our fallen soldiers in Somalia and we hope for the return of peace"

Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) - "We stand in solidarity with our men and women in uniform who are carrying out their service in neighboring Somalia and those who, for their selfless service to our country, have paid the ultimate sacrifice with their duty". This is how the Bishops of Kenya pay their respects to the victims of the massacre of the Kenyan military contingent of the African Union in Somalia (AMISOM) perpetrated by the Shabaab militia on January 15 in the base of El-Adde, in southern Somalia (see Fides 18/01/2016).
In the statement, sent to Agenzia Fides, the Bishops urge Kenyans to show solidarity "with the families and friends of fallen heroes in these difficult moments. That the blood shed by our soldiers in Somalia may unite us as a nation, in love, union and solidarity".
The Episcopal Conference of Kenya also calls to pray "for our brothers and sisters in Somalia, who for decades have no peace, so that one day it can return to their country. We ask the international community to work together with Kenya to make this happen as soon as possible".
A week after the attack, carried out by three car bombs, the official death toll among the Kenyan military has not yet been announced. A provisional report says that the dead are at least 30, but the press in Nairobi reports that the figure has reached one hundred, while several soldiers were captured by the Shabaab.
