Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) - The Chief of Staff of the armed forces of Kenya, General Samson Mwathethe, revealed some details of the attack carried out on January 15 by the Somali Shabaab against a base of the Kenyan military operating in AMISOM (African Union Mission in Somalia), in southern Somalia. In the attack, which occurred in the village of El-Adde, several soldiers from Nairobi died while others were captured. According to the Shabaab, the military killed at least 100, but authorities in Nairobi have so far refrained from revealing the number of those killed, saying that first the families of the victims need to be contacted. General Mwathethe said the assault was carried out with the aid of three car bombs. Another point that was not made clear concerned whether a nearby army base in Somalia was also attacked.
The Kenyan army has announced that it has launched a major operation to free the soldiers captured by the Shabaab. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 18/01/2016)
